Here’s why.Flowers Foods Inc. is voluntarily recalling select gluten-free Canyon Bakehouse Mountain White Bread and Canyon Bakehouse Everything Bagels for the “potential presence of gluten.”The Thomasville, Georgia-based company said in the recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website that the recalled products were distributed in 14 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.”Consumption of this product by people with a wheat allergy, celiac disease, or gluten or wheat sensitivity may cause adverse health effects or serious allergic reactions,” Flowers Foods said in the recall notice, noting “no related illnesses or incidents have been reported to date.”Candle recall: Nearly 143,000 candles sold at Dollar Tree recalled as high flames could pose fire, burn hazardsTarget gift card sale 2020: Save 10% on store gift cards this weekend with Target Circle offerThe affected products have specific UPC and lot numbers on the package (see below) and can be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund, the company said. Target posted a recall notice on its website for the white bread.In a statement posted at CanyonGlutenFree.com, the company said it follows “the strict guidelines of the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO)” and one of the guidelines involves frequent and thorough testing of finished baked goods for the presence of gluten.”Recently, internal testing of some finished baked goods revealed the possible presence of gluten outside of GFCO standards,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, a small quantity of this product was inadvertently shipped to the marketplace.”The company plans to conduct “a full-scale audit of our shipping and inventory management practices to ensure this does not happen again.”Canyon Bakehouse recalled itemsThe company said people should not consume products if the following UPC and lot number are on the package.
