For two weeks (or longer if you’re a cardmember), new arrivals from popular brands are marked down for a limited time before going back up to their full price. That being said, it’s not just a sale. It’s pretty much fashion’s Black Friday.For years, the department store has held the famous Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July, but this year, the event will be taking place a few weeks later in August due to the impact of COVID-19. Other than the date change (and that you may opt to shop the sale exclusively online rather than in stores), nothing else about this year’s event is different—other than the fact that Nordstrom will be letting customers preview all the deals on Friday, July 24th, weeks before the sale even begins. This is great news for those who need to be cautious about their spending habits right now, like myself. After the deals are announced, you’ll likely find me in front of a whiteboard, scribbling down a variety of mathematical equations to figure out what I can realistically afford from this year’s sale.Below is all of the information we currently know about 2020’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.Need help finding products? It’s free and you can unsubscribe at any time.When is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in 2020?The sale is open to the public on Wednesday, August 19th, and ends on Sunday, August 30th. If you’re a cardholder, though, you get early access. For cardholders, your shopper status determines when you can start shopping. There are four different statuses, depending on how much money you spend per year at the retailer, and the higher your status, the earlier you get to shop. Icons: Tuesday, August 4thAmbassadors: Friday, August 7thInfluencers: Monday, August 10thInsiders: Thursday, August 13thEarly access for all cardholders ends on Tuesday, August 18th, the day before the sale opens up to everyone. But after early access ends, cardholders can continue shopping as they please until the sale is officially over.As noted above, Nordstrom is launching a sneak peek of all sale items on Friday, July 24th. Not only does this mean that you’ll be able to start adding things to your Wish List in advance of the sale, but we’ll have more time to pick out of all the best deals to help you shop.What is the benefit of having a Nordstrom Card for the sale—and should you get one?The most obvious benefit to being a Nordstrom cardmember is getting early access to all of the great deals during the annual Anniversary Sale. While you could just wait until the sale opens to the public to shop, the most popular items tend to sell out long before the regular sale begins. Not to mention, the size and color inventory for many items will probably start to dwindle during early access, meaning there will be slim pickings for certain things when the public can finally shop.If you would like to become a Nordstrom cardholder—or join the ‘Nordy Club,’ as Nordstrom calls it—they are offering a fantastic deal right now where new members get a $60 ‘Bonus Note,’ meaning they will give you $60 to spend on whatever you want at the store just for signing up. Nordstrom offers a retail card, only to be spent at Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, HauteLook, and Trunk Club, as well as Visa Signature and Visa Platinum cards. There is no annual fee for these cards, and they offer competitive APRs.I have been a proud Nordstrom Retail cardholder for years and have enjoyed many of the other perks the card offers, including receiving Nordstrom Notes that go towards purchasing anything on the site after acquiring enough points, and the free, basic alterations on regular-priced items that I’ve purchased at the store.Upon signing up, you instantly become an Insider, so even if you don’t increase your status before the sale begins, you’ll be able to shop starting August 13th no matter what.What are the best deals you can get during the Anniversary Sale?While I don’t know exactly what items will be on sale this year, I can tell you what to watch for and what categories I’ve scored fantastic deals on during the style event over the years.Because the sale takes place toward the second half/end of summer and is tied to new arrivals, many of the best deals you’ll find are often on fall and winter essentials. That’s not to say you can’t score some great deals on summer items to use now and in the future (I bought my amazing Sole Society beach bag, which is no longer sold, during the sale three years ago), but when I shop this sale, I try to set my sights on investment pieces for upcoming seasons that I will likely use for years to come.For example, nearly ten years ago, I purchased a heavily discounted pair of new Frye boots during the sale that I still wear today (Frye boots were in high demand back then and were much more expensive than they are now, so this was an exciting deal!), and last year I got a pair of waterproof Blondo booties. One year, I even scored a Patagonia quarter-zip sweater for my husband, which he still wears all the time. Sure, it’s weird to think about things like boots and sweaters in the thick of summer, but your future self will thank you when you’re longing for such items a few months later that were once marked down, but are now at full price.I also use the Nordstrom sale to purchase quality, basic necessities like leggings, t-shirts, cardigans, bras, and underwear—and this will not change for 2020’s sale, despite the uncertainty of what I’ll be dressing for in the months to come. I am pretty sure the majority of bras and underwear I own have been purchased during this sale, that collection including a few Hanky Panky original rise thongs and bras from Wacoal and Natori. Along with these things, I finally purchased the ultra popular Barefoot Dreams cardigan when it was on sale during the event last year, and it was one of the many pieces that helped me through the cold, winter months that I spent in quarantine. I also got a few new pairs of Zella leggings (I get the crop leggings because I’m short, but the regular length ones have over 6,700 reviews!) and a number of casual and stylish t-shirts.As said earlier, I have no idea what the sale will include this year, but looking out for these items has helped me over the years while shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.The best pre-Anniversary Sale deals you can get right nowAlthough the Anniversary Sale has not yet started, Nordstrom is currently having a clearance sale where items are up to 70% off—many for a limited time only.
