For 2019, the Jeep Renegade sees its first refresh since its debut in 2015. While the subcompact SUV gets minor style updates and a new optional powertrain, it maintains its funky shape, off-road capabilities and, unfortunately, a lack of standard safety tech.
The Renegade stands out in its class, not just because of its boxy, unconventional look, but also because it’s a subcompact SUV that’s actually off-road capable. This is especially true of the Trailhawk trim, which has all-wheel drive, additional ground clearance and hill descent control. But even if you’re not intending to go off-road with it, the Renegade has some other fun features for 2019, like a new dual-pane panoramic moonroof.

The small SUV does have some big drawbacks — specifically in the way of safety features. The price of the Renegade increases quickly when adding separate packages to get available safety features such as adaptive cruise control and parallel/perpendicular park assist, both of which are new additions to the Advanced Technology Group for 2019. For comparison, class competitor Toyota CH-R offers adaptive cruise control (and many other safety features) standard.

- A 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard in the 2019 Renegade. It makes 175 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
- The new powertrain, a 177-hp, turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder, is standard in the Limited, Trailhawk and High Altitude It makes 200 pounds-feet of torque and is also mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
- The 2019 Jeep Renegade starts at $23,770 for the base Sport front-wheel-drive model and $25,270 for the Sport all-wheel-drive model (all prices include a $1,495 destination charge).
- The off-road-outfitted Trailhawk trim starts at $29,290.

- The fuel economy of the 2019 Jeep Renegade varies across trim levels. The all-wheel drive models with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, as well as the Trailhawk all-wheel drive model with the turbo 1.3-liter four-cylinder, both get the lowest fuel economy at 24 mpg combined, according to fueleconomy.gov. The Limited front-wheel drive trim with the new turbo 1.3-liter four-cylinder gets the best, at 27 mpg combined.
Crash Test Ratings
- Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are not yet available for the 2019 Jeep Renegade, though safety scores for the 2018 model year failed to earn the SUV either a Top Safety Pick, or the highest Top Safety Pick Plus, designation, missing the mark due to only earning an acceptable rating in the driver-side small overlap front crash test (a good rating is needed) and poor-rated headlights.
- The Renegade has not yet been fully tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, having earned four stars out of five for rollover and frontal crashes in two-wheel-drive format, and three stars for rollovers and four stars for frontal crashes with four-wheel drive; side-crash results have not yet been reported for either version.
